Asim Al-Chalabi is resonant, insinuating and entirely memorable. In addition,
Chalabi had a hand in co-writing all the tracks with Thilges’ Gammon
and Nik Hummer. The radio single, Izdiucz, is an apt example where Chalabi’s
playing is a potent evocation of traditional Arabic scales. His quiet,
gentle lead-ins increasing to rapid-fire dramatic plucking is a thrilling
example of mysterious sensuality. (...)
La Double Absence is filled with complex rhythms. Izdiucz, which means
the breaking of cultural barriers in Arabic, signifies the power of this
album, where two cultures meet and are actually listening to each other.
