Vienna Woods
Ludwig
van Beethoven got inspiration from his long walks in the Vienna Woods.
In the monastery of Heiligenkreuz monks still live according to the
Cistercian rule. The wonderful architecture of this medieval abbey
features Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements. Passing the valley
Helenental we arrive at Baden bei Wien, a thermal spa town boasting
Biedermeier houses, a wonderful Spa Park and the biggest Casino in

Wachau
The most scenic part of the Danube in Austria is called
Wachau, the 33 km long area between Melk
and Krems. This climatically favored region has been settled for
centuries. The Wachau is famous for its vinyards and apricot
orchards. One of the cultural highlights is the Benedictine
abbey of Melk; Baroque architecture at its best. To reach the
picturesque city of Dürnstein one can choose to travel by ship
on the Danube. |

Mariazell
Mariazell is one of the most famous places of pilgrimage in
Central Europe. Thousands of pilgrims come to the basilica every
year to worship the Lady of Mariazell; the statuette is made
from linden wood and was brought to the place by monk Magnus 850
years ago. Mariazell is not only famous for its basilica but
also for gingerbread and special herb liquor. |

Burgenland
This territory is part of the Republic of Austria only since
1921. It was West Hungary before, but with a majority of the
population speaking German. The capital Eisenstadt is a most
charming little town. In the Eserházy Palace, Joseph Haydn
composed and conducted for Prince Nicolas for 30 years. The
region around Lake Neusiedl is of special beauty and also an
outstanding wine area. Especially attractive is the city of Rust
with its storks on the roofs. Possibility for a boat trip on the
lake. |

Salzburg
On 27th of January 1756 Salzburg’s most famous son, Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart, was born. The house where the Mozart family
lived is a museum today. Other main attractions are
Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mirabell Palace and Salzburg Cathedral.
More than a hundred churches, palaces and castles are testimony
of the former power of the archdukes of Salzburg. Annual
highlights are the Salzburg festivals.
