Review

This is really varied enough to meet your aspirations of directing any user in need of recommendations which having to go to the same tired routine. Most of the movies are easily obtainable but ones that are bound to be overlooked by a decent portion of the IMDb community, and are ones of which the majority of people probably haven't seen a large portion. Then there's even a barrage of popular movies that more adequately represent the tastes of the FG, and IMDb community, simply because no every bozo in the world was allowed to make some hack, boring list. If cn knows what's best for IMDb, he replace the current top 250 with this much more improved version.

Where else can you find a compiled list where Noi Albinoi sits comfortably next to the very popular Children of Men and the critically acclaimed F for Fake? It's enough to placate any inquiring user with numerous types of movies that can fulfill their watching desires. Certainly most users know about the excellent Last Year at Marienbad, but it's only natural that many have absentmindedly overlooked its down syndrome stricken, ugly younger sister Muriel. Therefore, the list not only manages to enlighten users of films by lesser known directors, but even manages to accomplish recommending the lesser known movies by well established auteurs as well.

Then there's the sly comparison of similar films, even a longer running conceit between the old and new, that's bound to, unbeknownst by the viewer of the list, recommend movies of a similar type from an entirely different film era. Oldboy, for instance, is a great revenge flick that many newer audiences are surely bound to enjoy immensely. However, I'd suspect that the majority of younger audiences who have been impacted by this marvelous contemporary Korean film haven't been exposed to much of the earlier chambara movies that logically paved the way for the existence of such modern asian movies. Sword of Doom is one of these viscerally fueled chambara movies that contains the same raw emotion that many of those Oldboy lovers seek, and both are placed less that one hundred places apart as a reminder of the list's ability to erode the barriers between old and new for viewers stuck in either paradigm of movies.

Why, is it even plausible that directorial inspirations are prevalent on the list as a move to broaden many user's horizons? David Lynch is one of the most acclaimed directors of contemporary cinema, but even more appropriately he is claimed as God by many a modern film watcher. It's only reasonable that while his films are present on this list — Inland Empire is currently holding a high placement, meaning that Mulholland Drive will definitely be listed further ahead — that the inspiration for his films are also added. Celine and Julie go Boating is a somewhat recognized Rivette film that is definitely an inspiration for the oneiric experimentation of many of the movies directed by Lynch; it's wonderful to see this movie so closely ranked with Lynch so that fanboys can absorb the surrealistic beauty of films that predate their beloved Lynch. Actually, there's also Meshes of the Afternoon which was definitely an inspiration for the fragmented narratives Lynch employed; so you have Meshes located after Inland Empire, and Celine listed before indirectly suggesting that movies of popular directors are literally surrounded and enveloped by their influences.

Of course, all of this slight subliminal recommendation calls for some blatant placements for those viewers less astute than the ones readily able to pick out these noticeable qualities. Here we Se7en , a popular movie by contemporary music video director David Fincher, alongside the most acclaimed noir film of all time, this being Double Indemnity. Surely some of the most experienced of film watchers on the boards appreciate the modern macabre audacity of Fincher, but I'll ignore the razor for a moment and simply assume that these people are not the majority of Fincher lovers. So here, while basking in the glory of having their favorite Fincher movie nominated for such a worthy accolade, they notice that this noir is located directly below their favorite; this is blatantly located so there's no searching about for the most apt recommendation for this n00b user, it's right in their face directing them to more varied opportunities in movie watching.

Then there's the influence that indirect relation to a popular movie must have on the unsuspecting list watcher. Obviously, several Scorsese pictures have wandered onto the list given the various acolytes of the man present on these boards; certainly the films Raging Bull and, my personal favorite, Taxi Driver make appearances on the list simply because of the sheer number of fans roaming around the boards, many of whom are regulars who are bound to have voted for the final outcome of the list in question. These two movies has a writer in common, one mister Paul Schrader. Few are probably aware that Mr. Schrader is also an accomplish director; if anything, people remember his directing endeavors for that one movie about a male prostitute. These Scorsese fans have just been introduced, via the list, to an amazing film directed by Schrader, and Scorsese fans are now bound to search this movie out: it's Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters. This movie is conveniently available through the prestigious Criterion distributor.

But is all this merely a coincidence, or has FG all knowingly partaken in an elaborate recommendation system that will surely prove a successful device? Only time will tell.
