And it does not help to maintain it over months, let alone years.

No, I'm not talking about OpenOffice, Mozilla, etc. which came
basically out of payed software development and - for some
reasons - are given some kind of free/open source license. Or
commercial software development in general.
Actually the gift culture isn't applicable in the commercial world
anyhow.

The "whining" was not against you (or any other person directly), but
against all these people out there who can write feature requests or
want to convince others that e.g. "Linux must go to the desktop" and
_do not do anything really useful to help it_.

The real and only reason for Sun putting money into it is their fight
against M$ (or their own survival) - nothing else. I do not see the gift
culture in such funded developments (especially not with that quite
commercial motivation behind it) - and as far as I understend Eric these
are not the projects he's talking about.
