As I wrote before, after all this time I'm still unable to predict whether a game or download I add will be a success or be ignored. I'm really interested how it will be with today's addition: Scorched Earth.
Last May, I added a game called Howitzer. I got interested because back in 1993, when SVGA games were still rare, it already supported resolutions up to 1024×768. I didn't expect it to garner a lot of interest, since usually nobody expect me cares for such technical details. But it did. For a while it was in the top ten downloads.
The reason was not that it was an early SVGA game. The reason was that it was a game similar to Scorched Earth, and someone had linked my page from the Scorched Earth wikipedia article. When the link was removed again, downloads decreased, but it can still be seen as fairly popular, being in the upper 10%.
What more, since I added a direct download for Ballerburg two weeks ago, it has become the most popular Atari ST download. And Bang! Bang! has been one of the most popular Windows 3.1 games for quite a while.
So, everything indicates that artillery games are popular. Scorched Earth is probably the best known artillery game. Will it make its way into the top 30, maybe even the top ten? That will be interesting to see.
