Screenshot of the Day: Metalheart - Replicants Rampage

RIP Home of the Underdogs

It's final now: Home of the Underdogs is no more. On 2009-02-13 it went down due to the hosting company going bankrupt. It seems that Sarinee Achavanuntakul has no backups, or no intention to continue it, or both.

This is sad, but it comes hardly as a surprise. The last update was more than three years ago, and the downloads and screenshots had been down since September. But all in all, Home of the Underdogs had lasted for ten years in full function, from September 1998 to September 2008. Quite some time for an abandonware site, I do not know a single one that lasted longer.

Home of the Underdogs was not the first abandonware site, but still it was the mother of them all. None ever grew larger (5300 games), but in spite of its size, the games available there were in general more uncommon than those available elsewhere.

This site is indebted to Home of the Underdogs in many ways. Quite a number of articles wouldn't exist without it, Pastel Fantasy for example.

Farewell, Home of the Underdogs. I will miss you.

What else is new

Metalheart: Replicants Rampage was one of the games in which the Fallout community had set high hopes, after Interplay dropped Van Buren and developed Brotherhood of Steel instead. In July 2004 an inofficial demo was leaked, and there was lots of excitement. When it was finally released in 2005, it went mostly unnoticed, or maybe I just wasn't reading Fallout boards at the time. In any case the game was a disappointment.

And that's it for today. There are some small updates for 3D engines and post-apocalyptic games, just some updated or removed links.
