Screenshot of the Day: AXIA

AXIA and the Demoscene

New game for today is AXIA, an Asteroid-style shooter by Dungeon Dwellers Design, the makers of ACiD Tetris, which has always been quite popular with the visitors of this site. Related, I compiled a list of games connected with the demoscene in one way or other.

The Baryon Demo

Last time I had a small update for Baryon: that it was, according to a forum remark, from South Korea. Meanwhile I found a copy of the demo, which has more detailed credits. Besides, unlike the full game, it runs without problems in DOSBox, probably because the demo does not use the tweaked 256×200 mode, but good old 13h, though only the mid 256 pixels are actually used.

So, finally I can put up my own screenshots. I found that DOSBox' built-in screen capture utility doesn't work all too well here, since it does not capture the explosions, so I used IrfanView instead. IrfanView has the additional advantage that it can take screenshots automatically at a given interval. It can be difficult to play an action game and take screenshots at the same time.

It didn't help me much, however. In most cases, those lovely explosions I took so much pain to capture were of my own craft, not the enemy. This game is a lot harder than Raptor: Call of the Shadows.

Enemy Nations and Windows 3.1

When Windward Studios put Enemy Nations up for free download, they did not include the 3.1 executables in the archive, or so they said. So I've always been on the lookout for a full CD, hoping to restore compatibility for that platform. Now I've finally found one, but guess what, it does not include a 16-bit executable either. What it does include are Win32s and WinG.

Win32s enables some 32-bit programs to be run under Windows 3.1, while WinG was a forerunner of DirectX. Both are free downloads from Microsoft and can be found on many places on the web. So I guess that's all you need to run Enemy Nations on a 3.1 box, should you feel inclined to do so.
