I have not currently installed Linux on any of my computers. I had once, for a short time, and probably will again. But it is not something that concerns me at present, so this link list is fairly generic. If you are already a Linux user, I doubt that you will find anything of interest here; but if you are just starting, or merely interested in the topic, it might be of some help.
I live in a small town in the mid-West region of Western Australia. Well, it used to be a town, up until the early 1940s. There was a railway station, post office, general store, hotel, and yes, a school. Gradually the town died and the buildings got demolished or transported elsewhere, until all that remained was the school teacher's house, now known locally as "the old school house". As the only resident left in town, I have declared myself School Principal. I'm also the Mayor and Sheriff.
I sat endless hours in my splendid isolation, with only kangaroos, rabbits, birds and foxes for company, lovingly creating Linux for me. The old school lives again, and my students scatter the face of this earth.
Weißt du, wieviel Sternlein stehen

Weißt du, wieviel Wolken gehen,

"I've always considered Mandrake to be the most user-friendly of the major distributions, and the new 8.0 release is no exception Overall, Mandrake 8.0 is one of the best distributions out there, and while it is very user-friendly, it is also a complete system, which should keep even the most expert user happy." - Nathan Hubbard
The Official Release of Slackware Linux by Patrick Volkerding is an advanced Linux operating system, designed with the twin goals of ease of use and stability as top priorities. Including the latest popular software while retaining a sense of tradition, providing simplicity and ease of use alongside flexibility and power, Slackware brings the best of all worlds to the table.
A comprehensive distribution that contains all the benefits of a Debian system with the added advantages of a super easy install, solid support, configuration setup, system management functions and a collection of applications guaranteed to keep your interest.
Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite fully featured. Puppy boots into a 48 - 54M ramdisk, and that's it, the whole caboodle runs in RAM. Unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, Puppy in his entirety loads into RAM. This means that most applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly.
Gentoo compiles the Linux kernel (i.e., the operating system itself) and all of the applications from source code, with optimisations for the particular hardware it is to run on. This results in a significant improvement in speed.
Of course, this is something that you can never do with MS Windows, as the source code is a deep dark secret -- all you get is the binary files, i.e., the already-compiled code.
What bothered me mostly with Gentoo is that the installation process is complicated, and I wanted to be able to recommend a Linux distribution on this page that any reasonably competent computer user could easily install. - Barry Kauler
CD-Linux is the rare linux distribution that encourages it's users to develop their own Linux distribution, and gives the tools to do so. I've, so far, made two systems using their methods. Very nice.
Even though it's probably something for the more knowledgable people, CD-Linux looks to be a very promising project. The fact that they use Debian as their base system endears them to me, too. *Sniff*
In any case, I'd recommend that all you folks sick of being spoon-fed your distributions to get over there and learn yourself how to make your own system.
Hey, worst case, you loose 6 hours and 750MB of system Footprint. ;) - The Keep (defunct)
- SimplyMEPIS allows you to test and try the software before you install to your harddrive
- SimplyMEPIS includes the very best business and multimedia programs
- SimplyMEPIS features unique hardware detection and configuration superior to any others
- SimplyMEPIS is pre-configured for simplicity and ease of use, you're productive in a matter of minutes, not hours.
"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are". The Ubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.
The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.
Trinux is a ramdisk-based Linux distribution that boots from a single floppy or CD-ROM, loads it packages from an HTTP/FTP server, a FAT/NTFS/ISO filesystem, or additional floppies. Trinux contains the latest versions of popular Open Source network security tools for port scanning, packet sniffing, vulnerability scanning, sniffer detection, packet construction, active/passive OS fingerprinting, network monitoring, session-hijacking, backup/recovery, computer forensics, intrusion detection, and more. Trinux also provides support for Perl, PHP, and Python scripting languages. Remote Trinux boxes can be managed securely with OpenSSH.
Trinux gives you the power of Linux security tools without requiring a full-blown Linux install or the need to download, compile, install, and update a complete suite of security tools that are typically not found in mainstream distributions.
ELKS is the Embeddable Linux Kernel Subset, a project to build a small kernel subset of Linux (which will provide more or less UNIX V7 functionality within the kernel) that can run on machines with limited processor and memory resources. More information on the background, goals and current status of the project can be found at the ELKS home page.
The initial proposed targets are the Intel 8086 and eventually the 286's 16-bit protected mode. A kernel that can run on this kind of hardware is useful for embedded systems projects, for third world deployment where 80x86 x>0 machines are not easily available, and for use on various palmtops.
ELKS is intended to be a subset of true Linux, and ought to be small enough to be understood by one person, so it should be invaluable as a learning tool. ELKS recently entered the beta development state and most of it's functionality is there.
LRP is small enough to fit on a single 1.44MB floppy disk, and makes building and maintaining routers, access servers, thin servers, thin clients, network appliances, and typically embedded systems next to trivial.
Linux has been ported to a variety of PowerPC platforms, first and foremost to PowerMacs. On older (pre-G4) PowerMacs it will run better than OS X.
Um, this is one of those everything-that-does-not-fit-anywhere-else sections you probably already got used to while surfing this site.
SANE stands for "Scanner Access Now Easy" and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, hand-held scanner, video- and still-cameras, frame-grabbers, etc.). The SANE API is public domain and its discussion and development is open to everybody. The current source code is written for UNIX (including GNU/Linux) and is available under the GNU General Public License (the SANE API is available to proprietary applications and backends as well, however).
The expression "under construction" doesn't even approximate what happens here. "Perpetually outdated" comes a little closer.
Please note that zombie badgers are banned in many municipalities in California and Wisconsin; zombie badgers must remain leashed at all times in Texas. Zombie badgers can move at great speeds, and are prone to sudden acceleration; use proper caution when driving your zombie badger. Do not allow your zombie badger to consume mushrooms or African snakes, or your badger may emit catchy techno music. Do not taunt zombie badgers. Prolonged use of a zombie badger may cause acne, insomnia, leprosy, unusual weather, or the end of time. Please dispose of your zombie badgers properly; consult your local recycling company for proper disposal protocols.
