Windows
16 Bit
I have now, once again, a computer running Windows 3.1 (actually,
Windows for Workgroups 3.11), an IBM PS/2 57.
On its page you will find a few links to Windows 3.1 games. I have
windows 1.04 installed on another computer, an IBM PS/2 55SX. These are the only two versions of 16-bit Windows
that I know. I must say that I like them both.

- Calmira is a complete 16-bit shell
that lets you manage files, launch applications and control tasks. It
brings Windows 3.1 up to date with some of the advanced user interface
enhancements from the Windows world, and for most people, provides welcome
relief from the awkwardness of File Manager. In other words, if you
want Windows 3.1 to look like 95, there's nothing to stop you. Why anyone
would want this, is beyond me. I'd rather have Windows 95 (or 98, or XP)
look like 3.1.

- Turn off zip file support
In Run, type:
regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll
This will unregister zip files, so you will have to associate them again
with the archive utility of your choice.
To re-enable zip file support, type the above without the /u.
- Disable File Protection
- Run regedit
- Find the key SFCDisable
- Set it to ffffff9d
- See Registry Guide for additional steps.
A brute force method is to simply delete the directory Windows replaces
the system files from. By default, this is
%systemroot%\system32\dllcache.
