The Atlas was originally released by Artdink (best known outside Japan for A-Train) for the NEC PC-98 in 1991. In 1994, it was ported to the Super Famicom and PC-Engine (Super CD-ROMē). On the consoles, it got the simpler subtitle Renaissance Voyager.

In 1995, Sunflowers released a German translation. It was simply called Atlas and was available for the PC only, though Sunflowers had previously been active in the Amiga market as well. Contrary to what you sometimes read this was a DOS, not a Windows game. It ran in hi-res VGA, the title screen alone was displayed in SVGA if possible.

The German press didn't like it very much, and so we didn't see any further games. In Japan, a sequel had already been released in 1993, and the series is still continued today.
