There have only been three games in this series. The first Bard's Tale game, officially titled Tales of the Unknown Volume I: The Bard's Tale, was written by Michael Cranford for Interplay Productions. It was published by Electronic Arts in 1985 for Apple ][ and Commodore 64, more platforms, and two more games, soon followed:

The second column with the Apple icon is the Apple IIGS. The PC versions of all three games used EGA graphics.
1991 the Bard's Tale Construction Set was released by Interplay for Amiga and IBM PC. It allowed users to create games in the style of the Bard's Tale series, ironically (on the PC) even with better graphics than the originals, since it ran in VGA, not in EGA. It seems that only one game was ever created with it, The Bard's Lore by John H. Wigforss.
In May 2003, Brian Fargo bought back the rights for his new company, InXile Entertainment (he later bought back Wasteland, too). In fall 2004 he brought out a new game for Playstation 2 and Xbox, simply titled The Bard's Tale. Since InXile owns the rights only to the title, not to the content of the original series, that is exactly where the connection ends. Fans of the series will probably be happier with Devil Whiskey.
