Baryon

What is it?
A vertical shoot-'em-up somewhat in the style of Raiden, DOS/VGA, 1995.
What computer or emulator will it run on?
A 486. The demo runs well in DOSBox, the full version not.

The developers of Baryon wanted to give players a true arcade experience. This is certainly true for the difficulty level. Even if you reduce the speed in the options menu, you'll get killed very quickly.

Baryon runs in a weird hacked VGA mode at 256×200, which had the advantage of approximately square pixels. It is also rather fast, and the game will run on a 486. The disadvantage is that not all cards support it, let alone support it well, and it tends to crash DOSBox. The demo, which uses standard 13h, is thus far less problematic.

A Baryon, by the way, is a sub-atomic particle.

Baryon is a bit mysterious. It was developed by ACRO Studio, about which nothing is known. The only credit the game shows is for Carlos Hasan for his MiniMOD player. The readme of the demo version however gives the full credits:
