Cabol II

What is it?
An arcade game for the Macintosh, 1996. This game is from the United States.
What computer or emulator will it run on?
It played best on my Performa 630.
Similar Games:
Oxyd, Arkanoid, Dr. Rudy 2.

Was there ever a Cabol I? I would think so, but I found no trace of it. There is a Cabol III, which has about twice the download size, but all the download links I found were broken.

At first look, Cabol II may look like some sort of Breakout clone, but that isn't quite correct. You do have a paddle you can move horizontally, and there are bouncing balls, but that's where the similarity ends.

The balls can land in one of the two internally lit trash cans at the sides of the screen. That is good, because this is the only thing that scores you points. The balls could also hit the long bar at the center. This is bad, because they will push it down (everything in the game more or less obeys the laws of physics), and once it's down all the way, the game ends.

Later on you get different balls (cabols), and you get goodies you can catch with your paddle. These might give you extra points, or enlarge your paddle, or do other welcome things. All in all Cabol II is an awesome arcade game, not least because of its exceedingly well done graphics, but you have to run it on the right hardware for full enjoyment.

System Requirements

The inclosed readme is remarkably taciturn on this subject. From my experiences, the game needs a 68040 or at least a very fast 68030 to run well. It seems to prefer the system 7 family and will be less stable on older or newer systems.

Under system 7, you need to set your monitor to 256 colors, else the display will be completely mangled. On OS 8, it will run under thousands of colors as well. For purely optical reasons, you should set your monitor to 640×480 as well. In detail, these were my experiences on various systems:

Performa 630 (7.5)
This is the system it ran best on. And it looks really awesome on a 17" monitor at 640×480!
Performa 6400 (8.5)
The only problem I could put my finger on is that the game vanished at a mouse click, but it just didn't feel right, probably in part due to the high screen resolution.
Macintosh IIcx (6.0)
Ran rather slow, and crashed after a few minutes.
LC II (7.0)
Stable but far too slow.
