In June 2004 I was browsing the Fallout Yurop forum and came across this very short thread about Deuteros, which the poster said might be an inspiration for the modders. There wasn't much to gather from this post except that it involved space flight, and that it was set after an apocalypse of sorts. I was interested. I am always interested in post-apocalyptic games.
After some Internet research I'm not all that wiser than before. Deuteros is the sequel of Millenium 2.2, it was Amiga and Atari ST only (unlike the its predecessor, which was available for some 8-bit platforms and PC too), the reviewers are enthusiastic and don't want to give away too much of the story line. It is a hard game, and some features are difficult to figure out.
That's probably why I didn't finish the page back in June. And even now [2004-09-08] I can only invite you to read the reviews and make your own opinion.
Let's face it. Millennium was easy - you just couldn't lose. Deuteros wasn't. In your first couple of games, the Methanoids will kill you. After that, you get used to it and learn their tactics - and if you must lose a planet, you remember to MTX out that precious Silver and Palladium before the Meths can get their grubby paws on it.
The game has been beautifully designed in terms of its sounds and graphics, its functionality (highly original but soon intuitive) and its extremely absorbing gameplay. There's more than a hint of the visual design from the Ridley Scott film, Alien, and it works very nicely.
This really was a game that grabbed you and didn't let go. My family didn't see a lot of me during the holiday season when I bought the game! Sadly when I decided it might be nice to play it again I couldn't find it. Perhaps I sold it, or perhaps some kind soul from my local computer club stole it. It was a great pity either way. There was always one piece of the puzzle I could never quite finish, and that was the pirates issue. I had the prison pod, but I could never figure out how to get them into it. If anyone has the key I'd love to hear what it was; I asked years ago on the newsgroups but no-one seemed any wiser than me on the subject. Oh, and what the hell was that jukebox thing for?!!
