Dune 2000

What is it? US
A not very well done remake of the all-time RTS classic Dune II. 1998, Windows.
What computer or emulator will it run on?
A Pentium II, I guess.
Similar Games
Age of Empires, Street Wars, Dungeon Keeper 2.

In 1998 Dune II got a facelift under the name of Dune 2000, with very little change in gameplay but inferior graphics. Using the odd resolution of 640×400, Westwood Studios furthermore decided to part with the well-known imagery of the Dune movie and give the units designs of their own. The graphics of Dune II still look fresh ten years later; the graphics of Dune 2000 must have looked dated right when it came out. Not bad for a fan remake, but this wasn't a fan remake. They tried to make it up with rather annoying cinematics.

Changes in gameplay were mostly odd shapes for the buildings (concrete slabs are now 2×2, and most buildings occupy 3×3 or 3×2 tiles) and altered dependencies (what you must have to build something else). Of course, there are aspects where it plays better than its predecessor, you can select several units at once by dragging the mouse cursor, and buildings do not have to be connected by concrete slabs any more.

There was a Playstation version the next year which was all 3D, but I have not seen any screenshots anywhere (screenshots on a PSX are difficult to make, I guess).

Emperor: Battle for Dune (2001) was a new game, though similar to the two earlier ones. Here the goal was to become emperor. It was all 3D and came on no less than four CDs.
