Final Fantasy VII is a remarkable game within the Final Fantasy series as well as in general. Consider:
- It was the first Final Fantasy game for the Playstation, and the first that was released in a PC version as well.
- It was one of the first (the first?) major Playstation games and one of the first major 3D games that was not some sort of DOOM clone.
- It emphasized the characters like no other Final Fantasy game before.
- It departed from the classic
medieval fantasy
setting farther than Final Fantasy VI or even Chrono Trigger. In a way it anticipated the steampunk genre.
It is obvious that Square had not learned to handle 3D yet. They had not yet understood that anime style and 3D do not go together well. They used different models for the same characters, and the majority of them looks like these little LEGO figures.

This game recieved far more attention than its better looking successors. There are more websites that are dedicated exclusively to it than to any other single Final Fantasy game.
