France was a big name in computer games around 1990. Most French games were adventures, often with strong action elements. Many of them were highly innovative, Alone in the Dark was one of the first or maybe even the first game to use 3D rendered actors. All the FPS games before Quake still used sprites!

From 1990 on, the quality of the DOS ports improved immensely. They now all had VGA graphics, mouse support, and, if applicable, Soundblaster music. Most games were now ported to the Macintosh too. Support for the Amstrad CPC was in general dropped.

Around 1993/94, the French game industry simply collapsed. Loriciel had folded in 1992, Coktel Vision was bought by Sierra in 1993, Delphine and Silmarils carried on, but with moderate success. At the same time, a very active freeware and shareware programming scene evolved.
There has been a return of the French game industry in the millennium. However, currently it seems unlikely that they will regain the importance they had in the 80s soon.
