Ground Control was advertised as a frenetically paced action-RTS
played out in a visually stunning 3D world
. Actually it is better
described as a real-time tactical game, since it lacks any aspects of
resource management. Units are selected, and can be customized, between
missions; the mission itself must be fought with the original crew, no
reinforcemenets can be trained, and there are no buildings.
The second part of the blurb is absolutely true. 3D graphics for strategy games were still uncommon at the time, Dungeon Keeper 2 is another example, but the dominating view was isometric. And as the screenshot shows, the world of Ground Control could indeed be stunning.
On 2004-07-01, Massive Entertainment released Ground Control as freeware to celebrate the release of its sequel, Ground Control II: Operation Exodus.
