The year 1989 saw a lot of Tetris clones and Tetris variants for the Atari ST. There was P. C. M. van der Arend's monochrome STetris and Columns; there was Michael Jenkin's simplistic STTetris; there was Trevin Beattie's clone of the Atari arcade machine; and there was JLTetris.

JLTetris is one of those games that stick out of the mass like a sore thumb. It has a simple but elegant design; it does not have a title screen, but a good menu system and allows you to configure the keys. Its most remarkable feature is the small size of the actual playing field, the basic block size is only 6×6 pixel. This makes playing it in an emulator a bit onerous, but should look very good on an actual Atari screen.

The name JLTetris, BTW, is in no way official. On the about screen, the game is just called Tetris, the executable bears the name JTETRIS.PRG. But it has generally become known as JLTetris or JL Tetris, where JL, of course, stands for Jaakko Lyytinen, the name of the programmer.
