Jotto goes way back as a pen & paper game, back at least to 1956. It is a word guessing game, a bit like Mastermind. It is a bit easier, since it is a word you have to guess and not an arbitrary combination, then again it is a bit more difficult, because your guesses must be words too, and you are not told if any of the correct letters are in the correct position.
Usually I'd doubt the wisdom of converting such a game to the computer, but Jotto ][ is surprisingly fun, to no little part due to the excellent execution.
Jotto ][ will run on about any Mac. I played it first on my Macintosh SE, the JOTTO letters aren't ornate initials there, you need at least sixteen grayscales for that. The screenshot above was taken on my Performa 6400. There is a version 1.2 that requires system 7, but I could not find out what its improvement was supposed to be. Therefore, I am offering the older one for download here.
Mark Pilgrim, by the way, should be no stranger to the Macintosh community. He is also the author of one of the few viruses for this system, the MBDF-A virus.
