Klatrix

What is it?
One of the first color Columns games for the Atari ST, 1991. This game is from Sweden.
What computer or emulator will it run on?
It runs in WinSTon, but not in Steem. A joystick is absolutely necessary!

Klatrix is a game true to the spirit of Tetris and KLAX. It works in low resolution only. I was inspired by some screenshots in a games mag from a Sega game called 'Columns', and after reading the article, I started to write my own version of that game! (Why wait for the softwarehouses to start converting it to Your fav computer?) When the original game at last was released, I was very pleased to see that I was on the right track! For those of You who don't know what this game is all about, I'll give You a quick description: From the top of the screen, columns consisting of three randomly coloured tiles fall down. With a joystick connected in port 1, (the one where the mouse isn't connected) You can move the falling column left and right. Each push on the stick in either direction, moves the column one step in that direction. The firebutton makes the tiles in the column change places with eachother. When You press the button, the tiles are 'rotated' downwards, i.e. the tile on top becomes the middle tile, the tile in the middle becomes the bottom tile, and the bottom tile becomes the top tile. Got it? Good!

With a joystick connected in port 1…yep, this game is controlled by joystick only, which effectively kept me from playing it. WinSTon did not recognise my USB Wingman (which works well with ZSNES, for example), and cursor emulation wouldn't work either. In Steem the game didn't even start. So there was little for me to do but admire the really outstanding graphics.
