What sets the Symantec Game Pack apart from other Windows game packs is in part the choics of games, but mostly the look and feel. With Memory Blocks, it's just the look and feel, for there are other Concentration implementations. But no other game in the pack shows Charles Timmerman's unique style as well.
Most Windows games had a kind of respectable look inspired by the style Windows 3.0 (and even more, later, 3.1) had gone to: 3D controls and lots of gray.Charles Timmerman takes us back to the beginnings of Windows, when it was just colors and thin black lines. I once set the colors of my desktop to a scheme similar to the default one in Windows 1.0, and it looked quite natural.
About the game itself, there is not much to say. It is fun to play. The simple pictures on the tiles fit the purpose well. I find myself coming back to it time and again.
Reviews
- Only marginally above average, Home of the Underdogs thinks about the Symantec games except Hangman and Smart Dots, but still worth a look if you're looking for some short games to play at the office.
- A different kind of game is a 1992 review of the Windows Entertainment Pack and Symantec Game Pack by Orson Scott Card.
