In 1984, Atari released a new type of coin-op machine, the System 1. Marble Madness was the first game for this system and remained the best (there were five in all). It had isometric graphics that produced a nice, never before seen 3D effect. It had true stereo sound. And it was completely operated by a rather uncommon device, a trackball.
Gameplay is difficult to describe but easy to imagine if you look at the levels. You have to guide your marble through various obstacles (including giant hoovers) to a goal.
Two years later the game was ported to various home computer systems. The best of these ports was the one for the Amiga, which was nearly equal to the original. There is a DOS port which had ugly CGA graphics at a time when EGA was already the standard and is not to be recommended.
