Mode X, first pouplarized by Michael Abrash (who gave it its name) in a July 1991 column in Dr. Dobb's Journal, is an undocumented VGA video mode. At a resolution of 320×240, it gives square pixels at 256 colors, making it ideal for 2D work. Rarely used for commercial games, it was rather popular with the demoscene and shareware authors, and unlike the standard mode 13h, it has been used for Windows games too.
