Ports of Call is one of those peculiar Amiga titles that for some odd reason has grown rosier and rosier in player's memories as the years have passed. Don't get me wrong, it deserves to be thought of highly, but it has some indefinable quality to it that causes it to be mentioned again and again on the Internet and always with affection. Unless you count Lemonade Stand or Hamurabi, Ports of Call was the first "managerial simulation". It was also one of the first original Amiga games. The following hints (I can't remember where I found them any more) may give you an idea of the gameplay features:
- Rescue Shipwrecked
- Navigate through Ice Bergs
- Navigate through Coral Reefs
- Keep your ships well maintained 85% and above for pre owned, 100% for High Tech ships
- Keep a healthy bank balance and low mortgage
- Pay off your repayments on your ships fast
- Buy ships initially at the start when you get a good cash flow as this increases your asset levels and makes your company look more efficient (fully owned ships even at pre owned levels make your profit/loss ratio look good).
- Visit your offices regularly as this reduces theft and also shows you run a tight ship both on and off the water.
