Apart from the hi-res graphics and the improved sound Railroad Tycoon Deluxe featured two new maps (Africa and South America) with region-specific cargo, like rubber for South America and diamonds for South Africa, new time ranges and locomotives, bandits who can hijack your trains, and sheriffs who will arrest them.
On the downside, there were numerous bugs and gameplay tended to be very slow, and the animations were replaced with with beautiful, but less entertaining stills. Gameplay itself is unaltered. Though Sid Meier is featured in the title, he was not personally involved with the development of this version.
