The third game in the Settlers series, released shortly before Christmas 1998, brought a completely new style of graphics. Now everything, houses, trees, characters, was 3d-rendered. At the same time, the graphics became far more cartoony than they had been up to now. In The Settlers II, many buildings had looked like renaissance book illustrations. Now, they bore no semblance to reality at all. This was due to the preferences of the German Settlers community (they loved the cuddly look, and didn't want the game to be too realistic), but also due to a general trend towards the end of the 90s, especially in Europe, a trend that now fortunately belongs to the past.
There were now three nations, Egyptians, Romans, and Asians. The next year, an add-on brought a fourth one, Amazons (maybe inspired by Alien Nations, just as this game was probably strongly inspired by Settlers III).
