SmileTris 2
What is it?
Christian Gruais' earlier SmileTris Panic! was probably the most configurable Dr. Mario clone ever. SmileTris 2 instead it is fully skinnable. These two features are for practical purposes mutually exclusive. Skins are easy to create, they consist of a bitmap with all the graphics and an ini file telling the game where to find what, and where to put it. There is no documentation for this, but it can be easily understood by studying the various skins that can be downloaded from Christian Gruais' homepage.
There are a few gameplay modifications when compared with the classic Dr. Mario. The rows of four can be horizontal or even diagonal, and occasionally smileys (which take the place of the germs) will fall down instead of pills. On the whole SmileTris 2 is the first game that can be considered a true replacement of YATC, which for 13 years held the throne of the best, and nearly only, Dr. Mario clone for Windows. Of course the download size has increased significantly, but by 2003 standards, SmileTris 2 can not be considered a bloated game.
