In 2001, the little shareware game Smugglers revided a half-forgotten genre: the turn-based strategy game, where you try to make as much money as possible within a limited number of turns.
This genre was created by Lemonade Stand on the Apple ][ in 1979, popular examples from the 80s are Hamurabi and Dopewars. In the 90s its popularity decreased, but some shareware developers kept it up, especially in Germany.
I found the full version of this game on the cover CD of the German Internet Magazin 6/2001. They claimed it had a sort of cult followership. I don't know if that's true, but it was successful enough to warrant two sequels and an add-on.
