This is a series of games all of which are in 3D and set in the same
fantasy world, Tamriel. Most, but not all of them are RPGs. Tamriel was
originally created by some Bethesda devs as a D&D setting. From game to game, this world was fleshed out
more.
For November 2011, the release of a new full game, Skyrim, is
scheduled.
The Elder Scrolls Travels
There have been two spin-offs for mobile phones under
the title The Elder Scrolls Travels, Stormhold and Dawnstar. The
screenshots look a lot like the old Wizardry
games. On platforms like these, classic gaming is coming back.
With Shadowkey, the Travels series moved to the N-Gage.
Since the N-gage is somewhat more powerful than a cell phone, Shadowkey
has a sort of 3D environment resembling Daggerfall. In fact, Marc Jones
used the original battle animation from this game!
In 2009, a PSP version of Oblivion was released in the Travels
series.
Freeware!
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Elder Scrolls series,
Bethesda decided to make Arena available for free from their website
on 2004-04-05. It was long thought unlikely that they would ever do
the same with Daggerfall. Though it had never been confirmed by
Bethesda, it was generally assumed that Daggerfall contained some
third-party code under a license precluding free distribution. Even
before the freeware release, Bethesda never interfered with the
distribution of Arena by abandonware sites,
but demanded that Daggerfall be taken down.
However in July 2009 Bethesda did, in fact release Daggerfall as
freeware.
