This game reminds me a bit of Circuit's Edge. Like Burntime, it is a RPG/strategy hybrid, but with a stronger emphasis on the RPG element. It gained a kind of cult followership, there was a book with the complete solution and the PnP rules that formed the basis of the game, and there was a dancefloor CD. Two years later there was a sequel, Whale's Voyage 2.

On 2004-07-25, I came across a review for a game named "Distant Frontiers Journey into the Unknown", released by Softprime on CD-ROM in 1995 or 1996. Reading the review and looking at the screenshots, there could be no doubt that this was none other than Whale's Voyage. Now it is not uncommon that a game is released on a different market under a different title. The strange thing is that there is no mention of this version anywhere else on the web. A google search for "Distant Frontiers" + "Softprime" only turned up this review, a search for "Distant Frontiers" + "Whale's Voyage" returned no results at all.

There was a second release with the subtitle
The Trek of a Lifetime
by Pro One, in jewel case only,
with a more appropriate cover graphic taken directly from the game.
This version is still occasionally for sale here and there.
