Terragen

This program lets you create and render 3d-landscapes. It is currently free for personal use, a registration is possible and unlocks some extra functions.

• Homepage: Interesting links to compatible software. Development stopped in May 2000, due to contractual obligations of the developer, but has been resumed in March 2002.
• Virtual Madness - Terragen Software Page: You can download terranim and bitty here, two programs created by Daniel Parnham in 1999.
• Firmament: terrain import and manipulation, and image post-process filters for terragen.

  For some reason, I thought "firmament" meant ground or terrain. It doesn't, though - it means Heavens. Although the name doesn't connect to the program, it still sounds pretty good.
