Philipp/Sabine Preisl-Westphal This project describes the job of an MP in Austria, looking at both the constituency work and the work in parliament. It explains different patterns of behaviour and identifies types of MPs. The study is based on personal interviews with all Austrian MPs and other original research.

Contributions cover the following topics: societal change, change in political culture and communication, institutional change, Austrian democracy after the change of the coalition government in 2000.

An interdisciplinary in-depth analysis of current trends, structural patterns, determinants and "critical" factors of the recent Austrian election campaigns and the voting behavior in the Austrian parliamentary elections as well as the elections to the Austrian Länder parliaments in 1999. Political scientists and public opinion pollsters focus their research on the following topics: context and competition framework of the electoral market in Austria; dynamics of voting decisions; trends and patterns of voting behaviour: issue-voting, split-voting; role of mass media in the election campaigns, etc. Case studies concerning recent trends in the voting behavior in Germany and Switzerland facilitate comparative analyses.
Volume 20 Peter Mair/Wolfgang C. Müller/Fritz Plasser (eds.) Voter loyalties to political parties generally have been in decline in the US and Western Europe since the 1970s, in particular in the 1980s and 1990s. This volume investigates how political parties have perceived the process of electoral dealignment and how they have responded to it. The volume covers nine countries. Each of the country chapters is an analysis of how individual parties have dealt with the challenge of electoral dealignment. Each chapter focuses on the perception and responses of several parties to electoral dealignment in the 1980s and 1990s.
Volume 19 Ferdinand Karlhofer/Emmerich Tálos (eds.) With numerous turbulences the 90es have been the most critical period in the history of the Austrian Sozialpartnerschaft. Analysts as well as practitioners now agree to the fact that this special institution in the Austrian political system must come to terms with changing conditions. In this sense, the "Austrocorporatism" and its capacity to act is examined systematically; at the same time the book outlines potential future developments of this crucial Austrian political institution.
Volume 18 Heinrich Neisser/Gerhard Hammerschmid (eds.) The phenomenon of New Public Management (NPM) is surveyed by an interdisciplinary team of authors from five countries (Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand). Theoretical-conceptional and practitioners´ contributions give a detailed outline of the ideas of NPM from different points of view and report preliminary international experiences with their implementation. The book focuses on the examination of the political-administrative context in Austria and aims to work out the possibilities and practical consequences of transfering the ideas of NPM into the Austrian circumstances.
Volume 17 Gerda Falkner/Wolfgang C. Müller (eds.) This volume looks at the social policy and environmental policy networks in Austria. It shows that membership in the EU has caused some significant changes in these policy networks. Changes in the formal rules of policy-making, increased demands on all national actors, and time pressure have affected the collective actors’ impact on policy-making. While the basic types of the social and environmental policy networks have not been changed, some collective actors (in particular the leading ministries) have gained influence while others (interest groups, the Parliament, and the Länder) have lost influence. There are also shifts of power between interest groups.
Volume 16 Jan Stankovsky/Fritz Plasser/Peter A. Ulram This study analyses the economic developments in the 10 Eastern European countries aspiring to join the European Union, as well as both the advantages and problems the currently 15 members will have in an enlarged EU. Besides their economic transition these countries have also participated in a process of democratic consolidation. Satisfaction with democracy and support for the democratic system and pluralistic rules of the game are analysed by means of empirical trend data, as are the personal expectations the people in these countries have regarding EU membership.
