Sweet sixteen 2: Michael´s R16 TX
The R16 TX of Michael has a realtionship wih me: he got it from me. In spring 2003, when I was sufing in the web, I found an ad about a R16 TX of 1976, red, ready to drive, registered and with valid MOT. I made the contact to the seller just for interest, but at the first test ride it was clear: ugly outside, nice inside! no good paint, some dents, but little rust, complete and intact interoir and healthy technics. Even gimmicks like power locks electric windows and electric sunroof worked properly. A technical check at my mechanic showed the same. Finally, I couldn´t resist...
After we had overhauled the brakes, my girl and me took the TX to the hard test: three weeks mountain rouds to South Tyrol. Conclusion: test passed, no problem on 2500 kilomters and 8 high alpine passes. The TX ist really reliable.
I used the TX as everyday car one summer, with the usual incidents like a broken rear wiper arm (vandalism!!!), was is twice as hard with a car like this, because parts aren´t easy to find anymore. Furthermore there was the question if it makes sense to hold three "intensive care patients" - R16, R16 TX, R4 - especially in town, where it´s hard and expensive to find garages for the winter.
Michael was the chauffeur of the TX when we went to the R16 record meeting in Alsace, in May 2004, where he obviously really fell in love with it. When i made the decision to give it away, it was clear the it should get into good hands, and also it wuld be possible to see it time after time.
Here some pics of the time, when it still was mine:
