Preface

top of page

Zamioculcas zamiifolia is an interesting plant from tropical Africa. It combines several characteristics that are rare or unique within the aroid family (Araceae) or at least in the Aroideae subfamily: succulence, pinnate leaves, complete regeneration, flowers with a perigon and some more. Zamioculcas genus page
Zamioculcas has been made available for cultivation to a wider public only some years ago (around 1996) by Dutch nurseries. Although it is widely praised as a virtually ideal indoor plant, it's not easy to find more information in popular gardening literature or -until recently- even on the Internet. And it's virtually impossible to find any images of the inflorescence on the web.

So, when I started drafting this page, all I wanted initially was to publish some of my photographs showing the inflorescence of my Zamioculcas zamiifolia plant. Then I thought, maybe I'd compile some additional information to go with the pics...

Here's what my initial 'photo page' has become so far: a quite extensive - yet still far from complete - compilation of web resources and own observations on this interesting aroid genus.
I hope it is interesting and useful for you ....

Between January 5, 2002 and April 24, 2005, this site has been viewed by more than 34.000 visitors from 94 countries worldwide (click the light blue counter icon at the bottom left for current figures). - Thanks for your continued interest!

Latest additions:

- online versions of A. ENGLER's descriptions of Zamioculcas and of Gonatopus, its closest relative (Das Pflanzenreich IV. 23B. Heft 37: pp. 304-308. 1908). (full text; Latin & German original. With 2 figures.) - (Copy kindly provided by Dr. Stefan Schneckenburger, Botanischer Garten der TU Darmstadt. Vielen Dank!)

- new photographs, showing mature female & male flowers and some morphological details (photo page).

- perigoniate Aroideae genera Zamioculcas, Gonatopus and Stylochaeton (Stylochiton): list of (currently accepted) species; list of countries of geographical distribution (genus page).

- online version of A. PETER's description of Z. lanceolata (full text; German and Latin original, pdf format); most parts also available in html (with English translations).
Note: these pages [Engler's and Peter's articles] are not shown in the navigation bar (yet). A common access page ("online articles") is being considered.

In preparation:

- map, showing the habitat locations for "Zamioculcas loddigesii" (syn. of Z. zamiifolia) in mainland Tanzania (as specified by PETER in 1928).

- German version of this intro page.

- revision of all pages (contents, design, navigation)
